I’m Dr Ed and I’m happy to tell you that I have the answer, and I’ve lost 38 pounds that way; and I’m no longer capable of gaining it back. The extra weight has been off for years already. What’s the secret?
Years ago I discovered that the naturally slim people, who never diet, and who believe they cannot gain weight, because they never do (except a little during pregnancy), have a special relationship with food that NOT ONE overweight person has. My book, The Marshall Plan for Lifelong Weight Control, told the story starting back in 1981, based on my interviews with, and observations of, many naturally slim people.
The naturally slim person eats only in touch with their body hunger. It’s like going to the bathroom: You don’t go to urinate unless your body lets you know you need to. The naturally slim people eat when their tummy grumbles, feels empty, and needs to be fed. Obese people almost never feel body hunger. They don’t wait for that and they don’t pay attention to their tummies for that purpose.
The slim folks, and I finally learned to copy them, eat primarily for body hunger they can feel. They don’t usually wait until they’re starving, but they wait for some hunger, and they don’t eat by the clock unless their job gives them no choice. They are also picky and fussy, and eat what they’re in the mood for and what they like, whether it’s for flavor, or because of what they believe is healthy, unless they are unable to get it and must eat something else for their hunger. They don’t count calories. If they don’t eat sweets or desserts, it’s not because they’re afraid of gaining weight. They only avoid those foods based on their health beliefs. Some of them eat “fattening” treats every day, as I do, and yet they, and I, are unable to gain weight over any period of a few days or longer.
The naturally slim people don’t like feeling full or stuffed, so they don’t simply clean their plates no matter how full the plates are. There are a couple of occasions when they may eat when not really hungry at all. One of those times is the rare occasion when they get hold of something they find so delicious that they are afraid they will never get that so perfect item ever again in their life. That’s a rare event, so their weight is not affected for more than a day or two. The other occasion when they will eat just a little bit when they’re not at all hungry is when one of their favorite items is available, and they just take a small taste or a very few bites.
What these naturally slim people do NOT do, is they don’t eat for stress, for boredom, or just because the food is available. They do not eat as a hobby. All overweight people eat for some or all of the reasons just mentioned, on a daily basis except during a strict diet. And guess what: That strict dieting cannot last very long for most people.
