If You’re Overweight It’s Because You Don’t Eat Like the Naturally Slim Do

I’m Dr. Ed, and I’ve not only helped hundreds of people, or more, to lose weight, I taught myself how to lose my 35 extra pounds and keep them off. If you’re overweight, and if you’re brave enough to learn the truth about why you’re overweight and to use the truth to your advantage, you can be successful too, without ever dieting.

Years ago, when one of my young sons was always slim, I carefully observed his relationship with food. It was a true awakening, and it led me to interview dozens of lifelong naturally slim people who make all the rest of us, who have had weight problems, very jealous! Those interviews led to my book, The Marshall Plan for Lifelong Weight Control, published by Houghton Mifflin.

It still took me quite a few years after that to copy how those naturally slim folks relate to food. To this day, I still only eat the way they do about 80% of the time, but that’s been good enough to lose my 35 extra pounds and keep them off. So, the good news is that you don’t have to be perfect at eating correctly, normally, or whatever you want to call the way that naturally slim people relate to food and how they eat.

I was raised to “finish your plate”. My parents meant well. Also, I learned to use food for things such as boredom or stress.
The naturally slim people I have studied never do that. They are very body-conscious, and only eat when their stomach is growling or they are otherwise clearly physically hungry. They use food for hunger the way the rest of us use toilets only for when we have to go. We don’t sit on a toilet because it’s a nice place to sit. They don’t eat food becuase it’s there, because they paid for it, because it tastes great, or because of stress or boredom. So it’s not their genes, their metabolism, or luck. They are slim because of how they relate to food. It’s because of how, when, what and why they choose to eat.

Most of my obese patients, when I would ask, would tell me that they never feel stomach hunger. They simply eat when they can, by the clock or for all the wrong reasons. They simply don’t wait for, or pay attention to the body’s hunger signals.

Another thing about the naturally slim people: They are very picky, fussy eaters. Whenever they can, they try to eat only the item or items they are then in the mood for. If they’re very hungry, they will settle for whatever they can take a few bites of to get them by. If they are eating something that is so fantastic that they’re not sure they’ll ever be able to get it that good again, they will overeat. So, why don’t they gain weight? They do gain weight that day, but since they only encounter food that’s totally and unusually sensational every few years, at most, that weight gain is gone in a day or two. Most of them don’t know they gained weight that day because they basically never weigh themselves. Why should they? When they go to a doctor and get weighed, they see the same wright all the time, unless they have lost weight due to illness.

Under stress, they are too upset to eat, largely because they are noticing the stress more than any body hunger.

At an all-you-can eat buffet, they don’t just start loading food on their tray. First, they case the whole place to see what foods look especially good to them. Only then do they go back in line and put just those best-looking items on their tray. Then, when they go to their table to eat, they take a taste of what looks best to them. If it doesn’t taste really good to them, they don’t take a second bite of it, unless they would starve otherwise. If there are other choices on their tray that look good to them, they try those. Picky, Fussy. Eat only for true body hunger. You ate some, and now you don’t feel that body hunger any more? You stop eating, like the naturally thin people do, so you can be thin like them. They don’t eat by the clock. There is no meal time. They are either physically hungry, or they’re not. If food is served and they’re not hungry, they may take a small bite or two of the best looking item, and that’s it.

You will probably not be able to just snap your fingers and eat like they do. It will be a struggle. It was for me. But, it’s worth it if you get up the courage to copy them. The good news is, there is no food you can’t have because of your weight. Don’t eat what you’re allergic to, of course, and don’t eat too much sugar or simple carbohydrates if you’re diabetic. Otherwise, just decide what you’re in the mood for, and get that if you can, but don’t eat it until you’re physically hungry and stop when that hunger is gone, not when the food is gone.

You should weigh yourself every morning before eating or dressing, if you can. “Why?” you ask, “The naturally slim people don’t ever weigh themselves.” You’re right about that. But, you and I are not naturally slim. We’re training ourselves to change lifelong eating habits that don’t work for a normal weight. We need the scale for two reasons: To know that we ate reasonably correctly the previous day, or that we didn’t, and also to enjoy seeing the results of weight loss over time.
Don’t expect to drop a bunch of pounds the first week like when you’re on a near-starvation diet. You don’t need to lose it fast when you’re losing it correctly and don’t have to be concerned about total weight re-gains when the diet is over. This is not a diet!

You may want to order my Guide for losing weight. It’s available on the STORE page for $9. It tells how to use the BEST System to train yourself to eat like the naturally slim folks. It’s a great system…Belief Enrichment & Substitution Training, in which you self-train by replacing your long-standing eating, dieting and bingeing beliefs that don’t result in a normal weight, with the new beliefs that the naturally slim people have. It’s a 4-step system. If you don’t need the GUIDE, that’s fine. You can try without it for a few days. If it goes well, great. If not, you can try using the GUIDE.

If you have concerning health issues, such as diabetes, you may want to check with your doctor before using this plan to control weight.

No dieting! Dare to be different and more succesful! Bon Appetit!
